Ghana would be co-hosting Global Citizen’s ‘Move Afrika’ concert with Rwanda this year, the international advocacy organisation announced on Wednesday.
“This year we announced the launch of ‘Move Afrika’ a five-year commitment to go North, South East and West Africa, across the continent and a few moments ago with President Paul Kagame of Rwanda and President Akufo-Addo of Ghana, we announced that we are taking Global Citizen to both Kigali, Rwanda, as well as Ghana West Africa this coming year,” Hugh Evans, Global Citizen’s President said at the sides of conference meetings at Davos.
‘Move Afrika’ is Global Citizen’s latest effort to pioneer world-class music and live entertainment across Africa. A five-year music touring project, Move Afrika aims to promote health and equity, create jobs, and put Africa on the global gig circuit eventually.
“Showcasing the best of Africa to the world, these events will drive transformative investments in community-provided health services within local communities, engage local vendors, agencies, artists, and crews, and provide opportunities for on-the-job-skill development and training,” Global Citizen said.
The event debuted last year in Rwanda’s capital, Kigali, and had Grammy award-winning artist, Kendrick Lamar as headline performer. Kendric partnered this Global Citizen initiative with pgLang, a creative communications company that he co-founded.
The show had 8000 people in attendance at the BK Arena Stadium – about 30% of tickets were sold, while others earned tickets through actions such as volunteering and tree planting.
Co-hosting this year’s event would not be Ghana’s first time as a partner country to Global Citizen campaigns. In 2022, Ghana hosted the Global Citizen Festival in Accra with top performances by Usher, SZA, Stormzy, TEMS, and others – and it was nothing short of an electrifying experience.
