15% VAT on electricity: Organised Labour suspends Feb. 13 march

Organised Labour has decided to suspend its planned nationwide protest against the implementation of a 15 percent Value Added Tax (VAT) on electricity, following an official communication from the government.

The Ministry of Finance issued a letter dated February 8, 2024, signed by Chief Director Eva Esselba Mends and addressed to the Secretary General of Trades Union Congress (TUC), Dr Yaw Baah.

The letter stated that the government had directed the Electricity Company of Ghana and Northern Electricity Distribution Company to suspend the implementation of the Value Added Tax on electricity consumption by residential customers.

This suspension is pending further engagements with key stakeholders, including Organised Labour.

The decision to suspend the February 13 protest was announced at a news conference in Accra, where Dr Yaw Baah emphasised commitment to advocating against what he termed unfavourable tax policies.
